Immigration reform a boon for business

Immigration reform a boon for business

The drive for comprehensive immigration reform is built around three interdependent pillars: economic growth, quality of life and justice. Sensible immigration policy has been a cornerstone of the United States’ growth and success. Unfortunately, our current immigration system is broken.

The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce seeks to make Chicagoland the most business-friendly region in America. Through a vibrant economy, we build a stronger community. And that requires immigration reform. We want to make it easier for businesses to hire qualified workers, in part by creating a viable path to citizenship.

People often characterize immigration as an opportunity for an individual immigrant - America, after all, is the land of opportunity. Discussed less often, however, is how our broken immigration system deprives the American economy of a vibrant immigrant community. A system of barriers, whether to low-skilled or highly skilled labor, denies our communities of economic growth and improved quality of life.

Immigrant entrepreneurs own businesses ranging from neighborhood to transnational enterprises. All can create jobs for Chicagoland workers. Likewise, the results from the hard work of immigrants are found all around Chicago. The scope of the positive impact of a vibrant immigrant community on our economy and the United States is boundless.

Today’s immigrants seek the same opportunities as the immigrants of the past. Today’s immigration policies are broken and our opportunity to secure a strong economic future is slipping away. For these reasons, the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce believes Congress must act now. And it encourages all businesses to join the Illinois Business Immigration Coalition to add their voice to the chorus calling comprehensive immigration reform.
